Corned beef is considered a processed meat due to the high levels of salt added in the cooking process and is therefore an indulgence. Indulgence choices are named as such, because they're not an essential or necessary part of our dietary patterns. Discretionary foods are high in kilojoules, saturated fat, added sugars, added salt or alcohol. If chosen, they should be eaten only sometimes and in small amounts.
Silver-side (categorised as untrimmed or fresh meats) will contribute to the Meats & Alternatives Food Group. If silver side is processed (i.e. corned silver-side) it will be classified as an indulgence.
