Alcohol

Alcohol is high in calories but low in nutrients.

It also dilutes your willpower and is likely to increase your chances of overeating.

Although alcohol can be included in the Total Wellbeing Diet, it is classed as an indulgence. You can use the food and exercise diary to look up your favourite drinks. 1 Indulgence unit is equal to approximately:

  • 1 middy of beer (285ml)
  • 1 small glass of wine (100ml)
  • 30ml spirits

According to guidelines set by the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the maximum daily intake of alcohol recommended is 2 standard drinks a day for both men and women and not more than 4 standard drinks on a single occasion.

Keep in mind that a drink is not always a standard drink – it is usually more. Check out this standard drink guide (PDF 273 KB) from the Australian Government’s Alcohol Guidelines website for more information
